Muir Woods National Monument In San Francisco

A paradise of these gigantic trees that can reach 79 meters high, Muir Woods stretches over 223 hectares of forest. Sit down to watch the light dance under the branches of these gigantic colossi that have crossed the centuries. It is estimated that the oldest of them are at least 1,200 years old. Formerly covered with redwoods, the coastal valleys of northern California disappeared in part over time due to logging. At the beginning of the 20th century, Muir Woods almost knew an identical destiny. Considered an ideal location to build a dam, the project, if it had been completed, would have caused the destruction of trees by the waves. Luckily, Congressman William Kent and his wife bought the land and donated it to the federal government.

Declared a national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908, this grandiose park owes its name to the naturalist John Muir, whose contribution helped to develop the system of national parks. You do not have to be a seasoned hiker to enjoy a ride on the paths that snake at the foot of these majestic trees. The 10 kilometers of trails in the woods offer a variety of hiking opportunities in terms of duration and difficulty. Paved for some, the trails are, for the most part, easy to access. About 2.4 km of paths are thus accessible by wheelchair. Download a map from the National Parks site or pick up one at the Visitor Center at the park entrance.

Spending time under these immense treasures of nature inspires a sense of calm, serenity and seclusion in a wilderness hideaway, while downtown San Francisco is just 27 miles away. As the forest can be very busy on summer weekends, opt to go there during the week, or at the beginning or end of the weekend to fully enjoy the serenity that emerges. The park is open every day. Attention, thanks to its shady environment, it is cool and wet throughout the year. Remember to cover yourself accordingly. It is forbidden to picnic in the park because litter and human food could harm the animals. However, you will find drinks and healthy snacks at the cafe near the park entrance.
